Organizational Management
The Organizational Management sub-module of HR is used to maintain the Organizational Structure and related jobs, positions and tasks. SAP OM functionality includes Organizational plan, matrix organizational structures, jobs, positions, tasks, work centers etc.
Organizational Management Objects
Organizational Management is based on the concept that each element in an organization represents a stand-alone object with individual characteristics. These objects are created and maintained separately, then linked together through relationships to form a network which has the flexibility to handle human resource forecasting, and reporting.
Following are the main components of Organizational Management:
Organizational Unit ?
Organizational object (object key O) used to form the basis of an organizational plan. Organizational units are functional units in an enterprise. According to how tasks are divided up within an enterprise, these can be business area, departments, an authority, a plant, groups or project teams. Organizational units provide the structure to which positions will be linked.
Jobs ?
A job can be regarded as a prototype or template for a position. Jobs (object key C) are general classifications or groupings for sets of tasks or functions an employee is required to perform. E.g.: Accountant, Business Administrator, Clerk. Each of these has its own distinct set of knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Position ?
Positions (object key S) are the individual employee assignments or placements within a company. Positions are defined as the designations held by the staff members occupying those positions. Positions are specific instances of jobs. Positions are tied to organizational units. Multiple positions may perform similar job tasks. Each position is typically held by one employee.
Chief Position ?
The chief position has specific characteristics. The owner of this position manages the corresponding organizational unit. From a technical point of view, a chief position emerges when a link of the type “manages” is created between a position and an organizational unit. The chief position is important in many areas. For example, it can be used in order to assign specific tasks in Workflow, to identify the manager for the Manager’s Desktop (see Section 13.3), or to grant access rights to subordinate employees via the structural authorization check.
Cost Center ?
Cost centers (object key K) are maintained in Financial Accounting. Each organizational unit will be either assigned a default cost center or will inherit a default cost center from the supervising organizational unit.
Person ?
Persons (object key P) are objects that hold positions within an organizational structure. In other words, persons are the employees in each organizational units.
The relationships used between standard SAP object types are as follows:
Evaluation Path ?
The evaluation paths determine the organizational units, or links to organizational units, containing the employees you want to select.
